Self Drive Car or Car Hire

Car Hire

The normal larger companies are available at all airports. Some students have gone online and found very cheap options with car hire companies in Foligno, the closest large town.

Spello and local Taxi

Taxi numbers: phone or email

Spello – http://www.spellotaxi.it/

Foligno – https://www.taxifoligno.it/

Private Driver

You can be collected at the Rome Airport and driven to Spello (about 2 hours). This often works well if there are a few of you to share the car/van. Expect to pay about 250 to 300 Euro for the trip Airport to Spello and likewise 250 Euro Spello to Airport.

Spello

250 Euros

He comes recommended by previous students.

Self Driving – with a Sat Nav of course.

Italy is a right hand on road driving system. You should have an international driver’s licence to hire a car.

Identity is important in Italy. Carry an identity card or passport at all times while driving.

Roundabouts; merging is fast

Superstrada driving – always stay in the slow lane on right unless actually overtaking.

Train

  1. There is an express train from Rome Airport (Leonardo Da Vinci at Fiumicino FCO) to Roma Termini (Central Train Station)
  2. The Frecciabianca (which is a nice train and cost more) or the Intercity trains which go to the bigger town of Foligno, From Foligno you take a taxi to your Spello accommodation (barely 15 mins).
  3. You can get the Regional train from Roma Termini (Central Train Station) to Spello.

 The BEST comfort route:

Fiumicino Airport – Leonardo Express – to Roma Termini

Roma Termini – Frecciabianca – to Foligno

On the Trenitalia wesbite (join this using your accommodation address) and select the journey as Fiumicino Airport to Foligno – that way they give you the Leonardo Express much cheaper!

FAST train: the FRECCIABIANCA is a high standard train. You can book a 1st class ticket and they are not very expensive. Another fast train is the INTERCITY. Both of these trains go to Foligno (very close to Spello and you can get a taxi to your accommodation)

CHEAPEST train option

Regional Trains: these are cheap, but there is no food or water available on the train and they are a bit rough and noisy.  You can buy a ticket at Roma Centrale Station. There are plenty of seats. The departure platform is usually the extreme left… outside of the roofed area of the station (a longish 5 minute walk with luggage).

The Regional train has the most frequent times each day but if you study the timetable on www.trenItalia.it  (you can change the language to English on this website) you might be able to schedule your arrival at the train station to get the faster/better trains The Freccia Bianca or the Intercity. If you don’t know how long it will take to get to Roma Centrale Stazione – don’t worry there always seem to be seats available on the trains.

TIPS

If you do know what time you want to get the train – you can buy the tickets online. You need to have registered with Trenitalia to buy tickets online. You can’t always buy tickets months ahead as the schedule is not set that far in advance – so just try a few weeks before.

I recommend put the Trenitalia app on your phone and that way you can keep checking for the next train to Spello or Foligno

Flights

Perugia San Francesco d’Assisi – Umbria International Airport (PEG)

There are direct flights to Perugia Airport.

The most common is the Ryan Air but there are others. See this link for more information; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perugia_San_Francesco_d%27Assisi_%E2%80%93_Umbria_International_Airport

For example: You could fly USA to London Stansted or Frankfurt or Brussels – and then take a Ryan Air flight from there to Perugia.

There are the normal hire car companies at the airport. A shuttle bus only operates to link with the London/Standsted flight. A taxi will take 25 mins and cost about 40Euro to Spello.

Flights direct to Rome

Rome is a major international airport with all major airlines. You can either get a train to the Central Station of Rome (30 mins) and then another onto Spello (2 hours). Alternatives are to get a private driver or hire car.

See Umbria by train

Take a relaxed approach and take the trains! Italian trains are easy to use and run on time. They often deliver you into the town centre with no parking worries. Take time to check out Trenitalia and plan some trips from Spello to – Assisi, Spoletto, Foligno, Perugia, Florence, Arezzo. (Assisi does require a shuttle bus from the train station to the hilltop town).

Spello train station is a 10 min walk from the top of the town.

Remember to validate your ticket at each station before boarding each train.

... and some places by bus

Buses leave from Spello to some towns which don’t have train routes; Montefalco, Bevagna and Trevi.
